Our activities

We’d like to welcome you to a totally unspoilt area of New Zealand – off the beaten track yet in easy reach of prime South Island destinations within the famous Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route.

When you stay at The Gates Country Lodge, you need look no further. We can arrange all the activities you could wish for, and we also offer four exciting activity packages: jet boating/fishing, backcountry tours, horse trekking, and wine education. All packages are totally flexible – you set the itinerary to suit your pace.

Seasonal events

Whatever the time of year you visit, there’s always something happening in this region, which is known as the Hurunui. Seasons vary dramatically here, with scorching hot summers and snowy winters. In autumn, the temperatures are mild and the colours stunning – a great time to go blackberry picking – while spring is the time to see lambs in the lush green pastures.

All year: Take in the beauty of nearby Flaxmere Gardens throughout the seasons – recently made a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Trust.

All year: Check out what’s happening at The Woolshed at Tipapa, North Canterbury’s newest events centre.

March: Thrill to the action of the Rainbow Rage 106 km mountain bike adventure from Nelson Lakes to Hanmer.

March: Gain a real glimpse of rural New Zealand life at the Amuri A&P show – a fantastic opportunity to sample local produce, art and crafts and see sheep shearing, steer riding and sheep dog trials.

March: Take the mountain racing Mt Lyford Challenge: adventure running and walking at its very best, with five extreme events to choose from.

March: Enjoy the Waipara Valley Wine & Food Celebration, the main event for the Waipara Valley wine region, with food and wine stands and all-day music in the grounds of the historic Glenmark Church.

September: Visit the Hurunui Showcase in Amberley, an annual opportunity for local artists to display their work.

October: Make the most of your chance to view and buy the latest in art and craft at the Christmas Country Fete in Culverden, Christchurch, held on the last Thursday in October each year.

October: Savour a feast of wine and food at the Kaikoura Seafest, an annual celebration of the abundance of the ocean.

Oct-April: Get along to the farmer’s market in the busy rural township of Amberley to pick up some fresh local produce – held each Saturday during the summer months.
