Our activities

We’d like to welcome you to a totally unspoilt area of New Zealand – off the beaten track yet in easy reach of prime South Island destinations within the famous Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route.

When you stay at The Gates Country Lodge, you need look no further. We can arrange all the activities you could wish for, and we also offer four exciting activity packages: jet boating/fishing, backcountry tours, horse trekking, and wine education. All packages are totally flexible – you set the itinerary to suit your pace.

Skiing – It’s a winter wonderland, with the local ski field just 8km to the north and heli-skiing on offer one hour away at Hanmer Springs.

Thermal pools – Treat yourself all year round with a beauty and spa session at the thermal pools of Hamner Springs.

Bungy jumping/white water rafting – For thrill seekers, bungy jumping and white water rafting is available at Hanmer gorge, 50 minutes drive from the Lodge.

Golf – Golfers are spoilt for choice, with five courses within one hours’ travel of the Lodge. Two are of international standard, or you can enjoy a game of golf with the locals at the three country courses. Whatever your age, gender or ability, take your pick from a number of tournaments, held during the spring, summer and autumn months.

Guided tramping/mountain biking – Hanmer Springs is a great starting point for guided tramps and hikes. There’s also a wealth of fantastic tramping trails off the Lewis Pass road, one to two hours travel from the Lodge.

Hunting – Venture into the bush for some wild pig and venison hunting with an expert marksman and local guide.

Helicopter sightseeing – Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the stunning local landscape with a helicopter sightseeing tour.

Whale watching – Just an hour away is Kaikoura, where you can go whale watching, swim with the dolphins, see albatross up close, visit the seal colony, go scuba diving or take a Maori cultural tour.

Ballooning – Watch as parks, rivers and buildings fade into the distance, making way for the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury Plains, in view of the Southern Alps to the west and the endless blue of the ocean to the east.
