Driving directions

From Christchurch

Take the main highway north (Highway 1) towards Amberley and Picton.

After Amberley township, turn left at the next major intersection towards Hanmer Springs and the West Coast via the Lewis Pass. This is Highway 7 (about 300 metres past Mudhouse Wines, just after you cross the Waipara river).

Three kilometres past Culverden, turn right at the Red Post corner onto Highway 70 towards Waiau and Kaikoura.

In the middle of Waiau (very small township just after you cross a long one-way bridge with two passing bays), turn left onto Highway 70 toward Kaikoura and Mt Lyford (the turn off is opposite the Waiau Lodge Hotel). From Waiau to The Gates Road is 9.5 kms.

From Waiau you will cross two one-way bridges, then you will come to a 25kph corner advisory sign. The Gates Road is about 500metres past the 25kph sign on the right hand side. Opposite The Gates Road is a blue Lodge accommodation sign.

The Gates Country Lodge is half a kilometre along an unsealed road (The Gates Road) on the left hand side.

Travelling time from Christchurch is approximately one hour and fifty minutes.
