Your hosts

Jim and Wendy Harré have over 40 years’ combined experience in the hospitality industry, and have owned and operated The Gates Country Lodge since 2003.

Prior to this, Jim worked for over 30 years for Air New Zealand as a inflight service director and wine consultant, and his passion for wine led to his involvement in the creation of the Air New Zealand Wine Club.

Jim comes from a family that is rich in winemaking history. His grandfather, father and brother were all winemakers, and his other brother has been involved in the wine trade in France for 25 years.

During the past decade, Jim has been part of the judging teams at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, Liquorland Top 100 Wine Show, the Liquorland Royal Easter Show Wine Competition, the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the Japan International Wine Challenge.

Wendy was born and educated in Dunedin and trained as a nurse in Christchurch. She travelled internationally for two years, joining Air New Zealand as a flight attendant on her return. Wendy’s great loves are old-fashioned roses, gardens, good fresh food and the renovation and decoration of houses. As well as managing The Gates Country Lodge and garden, Wendy works as a colour consultant.

Both Jim and Wendy are well informed about travel from their many overseas adventures, and there’s nothing they enjoy more than sharing stories and laughter with guests.

Living in such spectacular surroundings has also given the Harrés a deep respect for the environment, and they are proud of the eco-conscious approach at The Gates Country Lodge, with its considered energy use and emphasis on recycling.

Jim and Wendy look forward to welcoming you to the Lodge, which they share with their two Burmese cats.

“Fabulous food, great hosts and a piece of paradise.”
