About our lodge

The Gates Country Lodge has a long and fascinating history. Set among expansive lawns and established trees the original homestead dates from 1904. In 1934 Dearden, an English commander in the Royal Navy, carried out a major extension, commissioning the services of Heathcote Helmore of Helmore and Cotterill – an eminent New Zealand architect renowned for designing grand country homes.

Contemporary architect David Brocherie redesigned the interior in 2000 to incorporate all the modern amenities while keeping it true to the Lodge’s original character.

Today, the Lodge welcomes guests with the traditional comforts of open fireplaces, antique furniture, fine crystal and china, books, art and music. This is the ultimate place to relax and unwind among peaceful, comfortable surroundings.

Absolutely perfect! The jewel of our trip around New Zealand.”
